Washington Commanders face unbeaten San Francisco 49ers in Monday night football showdown

This was a wild weekend of football. Most of the chaos started with college football, but some of it carried over into the NFL. I wouldn't say we had the same level of upsets or anything, but there are some interesting things going on in the league. The Browns are the leader in their division, which seems like the first time in years. The Colts fell apart and gave the Titans their first win. The Falcons made a game of it late, but the Bears prevailed and showed how good they can be with Caleb Williams under center. The Cardinals beat the Rams at home. The Chargers are potentially the worst team in football. The phrase "Any Given Sunday" rings true this year more than any other time I can remember. Could it happen on Monday with the Commanders and 49ers playing?

The Washington Commanders come into the game with a 1-3-1 record. It has been an interesting season for the Commanders, who have suffered injuries, bad play, and poor clock management throughout the season. They started the season with the Eagles, and although the final score of the game was close, the actual game wasn't exactly impressive for Washington. They scored a late touchdown to give themselves a chance, but the Eagles were in control for most of the game.

The next week, they played Dallas and were blown out. They lost their starting quarterback in the process. In Week 3, they hosted the defending champion Seahawks and narrowly defeated them 33-31. This was with Marcus Mariota under center. He did a great job in the game, but couldn't do much against the Colts two weeks ago. Last week, the team faced the Giants and the game ended in a tie. I can't believe it is 2026 and games still end in a tie, but here we are. Much worse, the Commanders were in field goal range, and they somehow got sacked. It ran out the clock, and the game ended. Complete mismanagement of the situation.

The San Francisco 49ers have been elite this season with a 5-0 record. They are the Super Bowl favorites, and really look like they might be one of the few minimally flawed teams in football. Last year seemed like one riddled with injuries. They still found a way to get to the playoffs. What we are seeing, though, is a healthier team, back together, and rolling. They started by crushing the Rams in the first game. Then, returning home, they destroyed the Dolphins.

Up until last week, the only game that was close was between them and the Cardinals in Week 3. Perhaps Arizona is better than we expected; after all, they beat the Rams yesterday. The Broncos came into town two weeks ago, and the 49ers won by 10. Last week they faced the Seahawks and won on the road by three points. This was a revenge game for San Francisco. What I think has been most impressive about the 49ers is that they have been able to win with the run, the pass, defense, and in a variety of ways. That makes them more versatile than a team like the Bills, who rely on one person to do everything.

The 49ers have the 11th-best team vs. the opponent's running game in terms of yards allowed. They are seventh against the pass, so the Commanders' offense will have a tough task of stopping them. The Commanders are terrible against the pass, having the fourth-worst defense in football. They are better against the run. Last time the two teams played, George Kittle was a star with two touchdown receptions. Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel could both be out for this game. Kittle is +110 to score a touchdown. I'm going to take a different shot, though. I'll take Purdy to throw for 3+ touchdowns at +130. The Commanders' defense and Purdy's success this season make me think this is a good shot.
